Free Pussy Riot dance party

Posted in Uncategorized by Kapi Pulka on August 7, 2012

This Thursday August 9th 4:30pm @ King George Square

While art and music in our society are so often just another product
to be bought and sold, Russian all-femme punk band Pussy Riot are
proof that music can still challenge the system.

Pussy Riot play songs that are openly pro-feminist and
anti-government. And not only that, but they take their music and
message out of the record stores and industry venues and into the
public eye; performing on buses, on top of buildings (including a
prison), even in churches.

Three members of the band have been in custody for over five months
following a performance of the band’s song “Punk Prayer” (“Holy virgin
Mary, drive Putin out”) in a Russian Orthodox church in the leadup to
the Russian elections. They currently are being trialled on the charge
of hooliganism, facing up to seven years in prison.

We are gathering on Thursday to show our solidarity with Pussy Riot,
and with the idea that art and music should be more than just
background ambience in our society – that music should challenge the
structure and assumptions that dominate our society.

Dress in the style of Pussy Riot (bright colours, including brightly
coloured masks), and come prepared to not only speak out, but to dance
and have fun as well, as we take over King George Square during
afternoon rush hour. Let’s try to put the art back into protest and
the protest back into art.
